I think every gi has an interesting story behind it. I first started bjj about 6 years ago. I went through many trials, including having to have surgery due to an injury. I found this company CTRL Industries through a magazine. They were releasing a watermelon themed gi. It was called The Joose. Never got it. Fast forward in life I finally got my hands on one of their awesome Gis and then competed at an in house tournament and took 1st as a white belt. I promised myself I would wear this gi and keep it nice for that day I would finally compete. So many times I would either get sick or be out cause of some injury. When I wear this gi, I feel great. On the outside it's just a gi, but to me it's my gi.
"The 93 brand Gotham gi was my first. I was trying to find a low-profile gi, simple, nothing flashy. I like the small details this gi has that don’t stand out unless you look, which fit the way I wanted to feel in class. I was in a low place in my life and I wanted to find a space where I could blend and not feel scrutinized. This gi ended up creating conversations with my new teammates, and developing these friendships helped me enjoy jiu jitsu more than anything. One of my last memories with my grandpa was telling him how I roll around all sweaty in my gi trying to figure out how to gently break my friends. It made him laugh, so whenever I’m on the mat, I think back to that memory and it brings me peace. And it all started with a little bat."
"Many won't understand what a gi means to a certain person, like this one means to me. It may not be the most popular brand and you probably won't see anyone with it but it's gotten me through some tough classes and competition. I got this gi by chance when I was pregnant with my 4th baby and I used it 12 days after giving birth to him. Received my first two stripes on my white belt with it and won 1st place in my first jiujitsu competition with it on. Keeping it for the memories and have moved on to other favorite gis."
"That was my very first gi ...like a newbie I ordered two sizes higher...little did I know- that decision would be my downfall...now I get them tight and fitted!!! This gi became the loaner gi that I would let all incoming students borrow...lots of history in this gi...'the beginnings' "
"It was originally white, but we decided to dye it blue on our own. It became my favorite travel gi because of how sturdy it is and I take it with me everywhere I travel. It's been to Rio many times and has shared the mats with Ricardo De La Riva, Felipe Costa, Rico Viera and many other great training partners. It's been with me from blue belt, purple, and now brown."
"Here's a little info on the gi. It's a Koral Classic from 2007. It is the very first gi I ever purchased. I liked it so much I bought a blue one a month later. I still actively use both gis in my rotation. This gi is very special to me. It marks the genesis of my Jiu Jitsu journey. A point in my life where I stopped being a citizen and joined the Warrior class. No more being a bystander or a victim. I would dawn this armor and start fighting challenges to my mind, body and spirit. In these various battles and wars I would come to find both friends and foes. Both, sharing their blood, sweat and tears with me. And through it all, this gi has seen me through. Sure it's tattered, stained with blood and has a smell no amount of soap can get out, but it's mine. All mine. And you'd have to pry it from my cold dead hand to own it."
"I've had that Gi since April 2016, I bought it because Transformers was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid and Optimus Prime has always been my favorite Transformer. I'm still a big fan and have two Optimus Prime T-shirts and an Optimus Prime Rash Guard and own all the movies."
